Short Film: Find my Phone - Subtitled

Published on Dec 13, 2016
Any questions? Check the Reddit IAmA: https://redd.it/5jg18f

After my phone got stolen, I quickly realized just how much of my personal information and data the thief had instantly obtained. So, I let another phone get stolen. This time my phone was pre-programmed with spyware so I could keep tabs on the thief in order to get to know him. However, to what extent is it possible to truly get to know someone by going through the content of their phone?

In the Netherlands, 300 police reports a week are filed for smartphone-theft. Besides losing your expensive device, a stranger has access to all of your photos, videos, e-mails, messages and contacts.

Yet, what kind of person steals a phone? And where do stolen phones eventually end up?

The short documentary ‘Find My Phone’ follows a stolen phone’s second life by means of using spyware.

Although you’ll meet the person behind the theft up close and personal, the question remains: how well can you actually get to know someone when you base yourself on the information retrieved from their phone?

Do you want the full story behind the film? You can contact me in order to answer all of your questions by means of an interview (I’m proficient in Dutch and English), or to invite me to a film festival.

Artificial intelligence: Making a human connection - Genevieve Bell (Intel Corporation)

Published on Sep 28, 2016
We have been talking about robots and artificial intelligence forever, or so it sometimes seems. Images of smart machinery have inhabited our thinking and our literary and cultural imaginations long before technology made such objects possible. It is tempting to keep separate the art and science of the robot and the artificial intelligence that underpins it. However, there are reasons to thread them back together. After all, the AI of our imagination is the AI we have built.

Genevieve Bell explores the meaning of “intelligence” within the context of machines and its cultural impact on humans and their relationships. Genevieve interrogates AI not just as a technical agenda but as a cultural category in order to understand the ways in which the story of AI is connected to the history of human culture.

This keynote is sponsored by Intel.

Sci-Fi short film scripted by machine learning algorithm- Sunspring

Published on Jun 9, 2016
In the wake of Google's AI Go victory, filmmaker Oscar Sharp turned to his technologist collaborator Ross Goodwin to build a machine that could write screenplays. They created "Jetson" and fueled him with hundreds of sci-fi TV and movie scripts. Shortly thereafter, Jetson announced it wished to be addressed as Benjamin. Building a team including Thomas Middleditch, star of HBO's Silicon Valley, they gave themselves 48 hours to shoot and edit whatever Benjamin (Jetson) decided to write.

Based on a trove of more than 11 million leaked files, the investigation exposes a cast of characters who use offshore companies to facilitate bribery, arms deals, tax evasion, financial fraud and drug trafficking.
Behind the email chains, invoices and documents that make up the Panama Papers are often unseen victims of wrongdoing enabled by this shadowy industry. This is their story.

Top 10 Movie Twists of All Time

Published on Mar 1, 2016
Who doesn’t love a surprise? That’s why we’re taking time to talk about the biggest surprise endings in movie history (spoilers abound). Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm

What did you think of the list? Do you disagree with any of our picks? Feel like we left out or mis-represented any of the films? What do you think are the best surprise endings in film history? Do you like endings with twists?

What other topics would you like to see us cover in future editions of CineFix Movie Lists?

Let us know in the comments!

THE LIST

Location / Time Trick - Planet of the Apes
It perfectly rides the line between completely unexpected and yet inevitable that tends to be the recipe for great spoilers.

All a Part of the Plan - The Sting
Just when we think we're ahead of the plot - fully informed and up on every aspect of the machinations - we realize that we, too, are being duped.

Unexpectedly Bad / Guilty - Murder on the Orient Express
Initially it seems that there is nothing connecting any of the suspects, it emerges that the one thing they have in common is that they ALL have a reasonable motive.

Unexpectedly Good - Charade
After being accused of being the murderer, then shooting and killing the REAL murderer - Cary Grant goes with Audrey Hepburn to the CIA to turn over the stolen wealth.

It Was All a Dream - Wizard of Oz
Not only is Dorothy subconsciously working out her conflicts in a symbolic way - exactly as dreams tend to do - she ends up learning an important lesson about home by the end that makes her waking up meaningful to the part of the story that happened before her dream began.

All In Their Head - Fight Club
It manages to slip an entire character by us without us noticing, and the reveal? A wonderful hallucinogenic moment of reality crashing down around the Narrator in a moment of pure cinema.

Not Dead - The Third Man
The entire plot flips on its head, and the victim becomes the perpetrator.

Other - F for Fake
One hour in, Orson's story turns from documentary to fiction, engaging in a sort of meta-commentary on the act of forgery.

Mistaken Identity - Empire Strikes Back
As far as twists go, Vader being Luke’s father is about as big as they come.

X Is Actually Y! - Psycho
When it's revealed that mildmannered Sam actually dresses up as his dead mother so that he can kill protagonists weirdly early in the movie just to fuck with our heads? Well that just about takes the cake.
